The Ed Beardsley Memorial Scholarship is an annual, one-time award of $1,000 to a student who is a family member of the News Guild of Maine, Local 31128.
There are TWO awards of $2,000 each to two deserving students, one from our Portland and Waterville offices and one from our South Portland office. $2,000 of the increased awards is Guild funded and the match comes from the generosity of Donald Sussman.
The scholarships are presented in memory of Ed Beardsley, a shop steward in the distribution department, a member of the Local Executive Board, a member of the negotiations committee and an active Guild member for 21 years until his death in November 2001.
All applicants must be an immediate family member of a dues paying or retired Guild member’s family. The scholarship award must be used for tuition, books and/or room and board.
Applicants will be asked to list extracurricular school activities and volunteer service that they have performed in the last four years. Also any accomplishments they have attained or awards they have received.
They must then answer the following question in 350-400 words: “What would the founding fathers think of modern news and social media?”
Applications must be printed or typed and must be postmarked by the August 25, 2014 deadline and submitted to: Scholarship Committee, News Guild of Maine – Local 31128, P. O. Box 576, Portland ME 04112-0576
Applications will be judged by a subcommittee of the Local Executive Board. The winners of the TWO Ed Beardsley Memorial Scholarships will be announced on August 31, 2014.
